집중호우가 쏟아질 때 배관(파이프)이 거센 빗줄기의 압력을 견디지 못하고 터지거나 배관과 이음관이 벌어지면서 물이 새는 경우가 종종 발생한다. 오래된 배관은 내부가 부식하면서 녹물을 만든다. 2년 전 인천시에서 발생했던 '붉은 수돗물' 사태처럼 말이다. 이 문제를 한 번에 해결한 이음관이 나왔다. 경질염화비닐관(PVC 파이프) 국내 제조·판매 시장에서 독보적인 1위를 달리는 PPI(옛 PPI평화)가 게릴라성 집중호우에도 견디는 우수(빗물)·오배수용 배관(제품명 DH5.0 배관) 개발에 성공하고 최근 출시했다. 우수용 배관은 오배수용 배관보다 더 큰 압력에 견딜 수 있어야 한다.

이종호 PPI 회장은 "한국산업표준(KS)이 규정한 배수용 PVC 이음관은 수압 3.5㎏f/㎠(1㎠ 면적에 3.5㎏을 가하는 압력)에 1분을 견디는 조건인 반면 DH5.0 배관은 7.0㎏f/㎠의 높은 압력 조건에서 안전하다"며 "초고층 상업용 빌딩은 물론 아파트 등 공동주택에도 적합한 이음관"이라고 밝혔다.

또 이 회장은 "DH5.0 배관은 본드가 필요 없는 캡과 고무링 방식의 조립형 구조로 제작됐다"며 "고무링이 파이프를 강하게 압착해 물이 새는 것을 막고, 캡과 일체형으로 구성된 캡 안 그랩링이 파이프가 빠지는 것을 잡아준다"고 덧붙였다.

캡을 이음관 본체에 밀착해 시공하면 완벽한 누수 방지가 가능하다는 게 PPI 측 설명이다. 일반적으로 건축물에 사용되는 우수용 배관은 파이프와 이음관을 본드로 접합하는 방식으로 시공된다. 파이프와 이음관에 본드를 발라 끼운 다음 본드가 굳을 때까지 양손으로 파이프와 이음관을 압착해야 한다. 이 때문에 시공 시간이 오래 걸리고 외관 또한 미려하지 않다. 본드 도포를 제대로 하지 않을 시 누수 가능성도 높아진다.

PPI는 우리나라에서 가장 높은 건물인 555m, 123층의 롯데월드타워 지하에 자체 개발한 'DH 배관'을 공급했다. PPI는 비상장사로, 지난해 매출액 981억원과 영업이익 14억원을 기록했다.
